Etiology
- Secondary to injury and necrosis
Clinical presentation
- Tends to be localized
- Associated with a specific disease or mechanism:
- Autoimmune (ex. limited systemic sclerosis and childhood dermatomyositis)
- Panniculitis
- Genetic
- Infection
- Neoplasm
- Neonatal heel sticks
Calcification in Genetic Disorders
Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
- Subcutaneous nodules called “spherules” - calcification of herniated fat lobules
- Porphyria cutanea tarda
Most commonly calcifying skin tumors
- Pilomatricomas - up to 75%
- Pilar cysts
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Chondroid syringoma
Inflammatory conditions
- TB and other granulomatous infections
- Liquefactive necrosis of chronic abscesses
- Fat necrosis
- Congenital CMV
- CREST syndrome
