Acromegaly

Etiology
  • Pituitary adenoma
  • Ectopic production (pancreas, bronchial)
 
Skin symptoms
  • Thickening of the dermis with deposits of glycosaminoglycans (hyaluronic acid, but also chondroitin-4 and 6-sulfate)
    • Face: deep wrickles, infiltration and edema of the eyelids, enlargement of the nose and ears, thick lips, prognathism
    • Scalp deep furrows → cutis verticis gyrata
  • Epidermal dyperplasia and appendages are also often present
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Hypertrichosis
  • Nails thick and hard
  • Diffuse melanoderma
  • Molluscum pendulum
  • Acanthosis nigricans
 
Extra-cutaneous symptoms
  • Arthralgias
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Dysmorphic syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Organomegaly (heart, liver, colon, kidney, spleen, thyroid, tongue)
